THE FARM
What a wonderful way to start the day with a sunrise like this!
For years now Andrew and myself have always had this debate about which is better "The Horse, or The Bike"
"The horse I say"..... I would wouldnt I?,and yet he recons that the bike doesnt need to rest when it gets home,or get washed down, or be fed, or cleaned out, " ok fair point i say, but i have a bond with a horse that works for you because it enjoys it,and it can go to places that the bike cant, (that last comment always gets him!) huh! we,ll see is the answer i always got , but joking aside we have found the perfect solution, we have both got to admit that they work brilliantly TOGETHER,even he admits that now.
This page and many more is here to answer some of the questions we get asked about farming, the animals and how we manage as a family in the ever changing face of farming.
I have tried to answer these most commonly asked questions as best as i can;

Q/ HOW DO YOU WORK TOGETHER?
A/ Andrew says fine as long as i know who the boss is!....hmmm
We do work very well together actually, if he is having a bad half hour, i will just take the mickey and make him laugh, if im having a bad half hour Andrew will aggrivate me until it makes him laugh (again!) joking aside, we both have to have a sense of humour, or we would crack up,
I think the most important thing is to be able to laugh at yourself.

Q/WHY DO YOU USE HORSES, WHY NOT USE 2 ATVs?
A/Well why not use a horse, all ive done is to use my hobby for work, plus it makes my job a lot more enjoyable,
I have also been brought up on a flattish dairy farm, so i wasnt used to taking ATVs on the slopes,i would rather take the horse, and Andrew wouldnt take a horse on the slopes, he would rather take the bike, so it works quite well really.

Q/WHAT DO YOU DO WITH YOUR HORSES WHEN THEY GET TOO OLD TO WORK?
A/ As im not claiming my pension yet, this is the first time we have had a horse that has come to retirement age as explained in the horse profile pages,TRINKS has ended her days here.
Q/WHICH IS YOUR FAVORITE HORSE?
A/ I havnt really got a favorite, i like them all for different reasons, but i know Andrew would say SYD, (its a man thing!)

Q/WHAT IS THE WORST THING ABOUT YOUR WORK?
A/ The most upsetting thing for me when im riding around checking the stock in the spring, when the ewes have a lot of wool, they sometimes roll onto their backs to scratch when the sun in shining they itch, and if they get stuck on a track or something similar, they cant get up, and their stomach settles, and unless we see them, they can die, but worse than that, crows and magpies sometimes come and pull their eyes out, and then when i find them they are blind and frightned and confused, that really makes me cross, because its too late, and we cant see all of them all of the time, nature can be truly horrific sometimes.

Q/ WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT YOUR WORK?
A/ The best thing is working for yourself, being free, and riding in the warm spring sunshine around the boundaries after a long season lambing indoors, and you can see the landscape changing for the better.

Q/ WHAT DO YOU PERSONALLY LOOK FOR IN A WORK HORSE?
A/ I look for the same qualities, doesnt matter what the horse is used for, conformation, temprement, kind disposition, and a curiosity and willingness to learn are a bonus to quick learning.

Q/ WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES?
A/ Guess what! the horses of course, when im not using them for work, i enjoy them when i get time off,(sad or what!)
Or i draw when i can, or read, but most spare time goes building this website, which seems to be getting bigger and bigger!.
Andrews hobby is Clay Pigeon Shooting, which he does with a local club, one of the draw backs of that he tells me, is that shooting makes you very thirsty, so a trip to the pub is compulsary to rehydrate,ha ha ...yeah i believe you, thousands wouldnt!.
